The Howard Government has made significant changes to Australia's electoral laws.

Previously, the electoral rolls were open for a week after the election was called to allow people to enrol for the first time or to change their enrolment address or name.

Under Howard's new laws, the electoral roll will now close for new electors on the day the writs are issued (usually the Monday after the election is called). People who aren't on the roll will now only have that Monday to get on the roll.

At the last election, almost 300,000 people updated their enrolment during the seven day period after the election was called. Those people would now only have a three day period to update their enrolment to their current address.

Hundreds of thousands of people are likely to be disenfranchised by these new unfair and undemocratic electoral laws which will cause anger and confusion at polling booths on election day this year.

The new laws are anti-democratic – but that’s what john Howard is able to do while he has control of both houses of parliament.

So it’s vital that everyone check their enrolment details now, and for young people to get on the roll as soon as they become eligible.

Don’t wait, or you may find that you are denied your democratic right to cast a vote.
