ABOUT OXLEY

Profile
Oxley extends along the Ipswich Motorway, covering the outer parts of both Brisbane and Ipswich. In Brisbane it includes the Centenary Suburbs such as Mount Ommaney, Jindalee and Westlake and other hubs such as Inala, Darra and Forest Lake. Crossing into Ipswich, it includes suburbs such as Camira, Gailes, Goodna and major new estates such as Springfield and Brookwater.

History/Trivia
Created at Federation, but abolished in 1934, Oxley was re-created when the Parliament was expanded in 1949. It is named after explorer and surveyor John Oxley. In 1961, the Labor Party defeated Menzies' Health Minister, Donald Cameron, much to the surprise of its candidate, a little known Queensland Police Constable called Bill Hayden. Hayden held the seat until 1988, serving as Health Minister 1972-75, Treasurer 1975, Opposition Leader 1977-83, Foreign Minister 1983-88, and Governor General 1988-95. Oxley was the only Queensland electorate retained by Labor at the 1975 election, but was lost in the 1996 when Pauline Hanson won the seat. Bernie Ripoll (at 32 years of age) then won the seat back for Labor in 1998.

Redistribution
Originally an Ipswich based seat, the 2009 redistribution has now placed Oxley in the centre of the thriving Western Corridor.

Projected enrolment in the existing Division of Oxley is 112,100. Meaning it had lose at least 11,465 electors, or up to 18,271, to fall within numerical tolerances.

The Committee thus proposed to move Oxley's northern boundary to the Brisbane River and thereby gain 17,053 electors from Ryan (The Centenary Suburbs of Jindalee, Jamboree Heights, Sumner, Middle Park, Mount Ommaney and Westlake).

After the redistribution of electoral boundaries by the Australian Electoral Commission in 2009, Oxley remains the link between Brisbane and Ipswich taking in the following suburbs:

Augustine Heights, Bellbird Park, Brookwater, Camira, Carole Park, Collingwood Park, Darra, Doolandella, Durack, Ellen Grove, Forest Lake, Gailes, Goodna, Heathwood, Inala, Jamboree Heights, Jindalee, Larapinta, Middle Park, Mount Ommaney, Pallara, Parkinson, Redbank, Redbank Plains, Richlands, Riverhills, Seventeen Mile Rocks, Sinnamon Park, Springfield, Springfield Central, Springfield Lakes, Sumner, Wacol and Westlake.
